Something cute I discovered in my thesis research:

In a June 1940 WPA Interview, Mrs. Elizabeth Maguire told of her experiences as a North Dakotan in Washington:

"Three years I lived with Rose in Washington, DC. When some of the people I met there found out I was from North Dakota, they said, "Oh, from North Dakota," and seemed to feel sorry for me to think I had lived in such a place. But I told them they just didn't know anything about North Dakota, that we had just as good schools here as they have anywhere and that there was nothing behind the times with the people of this state."
